USA Triathlon approved helmets
Heads up to all you athletes out there getting ready for their next race. Remember that USAT regulations require all athletes to wear helmets during the bike portion of the race. This includes the chin strap by the way (I’ve seen countless people forget about that part.) Not just any old helmet will do either. Only those with official Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) stickers are allowed. I’m mentioning this because I overheard recently that race officials have been seen checking athlete’s helmets for compliance while the athletes were engaged in the swim portion of the course. Imagine your surprise to find that you’ve been red flagged even before you get on the bike! Also imagine how p.o.ed you would be losing out on the $200 that you paid for your entry fee. This rule is so important it’s listed as number one on the most commonly violated USAT rules list. Note the penalty: Disqualification.
When you purchase your helmet, make sure that you take the time to check that it meets CPSC standards. Most reputable dealers will ensure that they are only selling authorized equipment. Anything suspect should be brought to their attention. If the dealer is responsible and concerned enough about their reputation they would pull the items off the shelf. Besides, the rules are for your there for own safety. CPSC-approved equipment meet minimum safety standards and have been thoroughly researched by the Federal Government. If you a real egg head type, you can read the exhaustive and uber technical study for yourself. Enjoy!
The CPSC sticker looks like this. Take the time to check out your headgear and make sure that your noggin is protected.

Thanks for the tip on helmets. When you bike, what kind of CPSC approved helmet brand do you wear? What are the best brand of helmets can you buy out there that are not too expensive?
I have two helmets. One is a Giro and the other is an Uvex. I know that the Giro is CPSC approved but I’m still not sure about the Uvex. Might have to buy a replacement if it’s not because that’s my race helmet.
How do you know what a good helmet is? Do you have to fall on your head
with different helmets? Seems like a tough way to test a product!!!!
Thanks for the post. Good information to have as I need to get a helmet. Like the site too.
I wrote up how to find a good helmet on my website: http://www.usedbicyclefinder.com/how-to-buy-the-best-bike-helmet/
